Why Jesus

What are you seeking?

What are you seeking?

In the first chapter of the Gospel of John, two men come up to Jesus, he turns around, and asks them a very important question.

Jesus asks, “What are you seeking?”

These are Jesus’ first words in John’s Gospel and his words are directed to us:

“What are YOU seeking?”

It’s a question that ultimately reveals the goal of your entire life, for you will ultimately seek after whatever it is you most desire.

Our daily lives are a collection of moments spent seeking after our desires: the desires of our heart.

Two Alarming Truths About Our Desires

The Bible interrupts our heart’s desires to tell us two sobering truths:

1. The desires of our heart are sinful.

2. Having sinful hearts and desires, we do not seek God.

God’s Original Design

God’s Original Design

But from the beginning, this was not so….

In the book of Genesis chapters 1-3 we learn that we were made by God in His image and were created very good.

God created us to have fellowship with Him, to be in a loving relationship with God our holy and heavenly Father.

All this changed, but why?

Sin is why.

The Bible teaches us that our sin against God separates us from Him, who is holy and the source of all joy and peace.

Being separated from God, we pleasure ourselves seeking after fleeting, selfish, and worldly desires that do not bring us lasting joy or peace. Our end apart from God is only sin and death.

This is the bad news….

Now for the good news!

Now for the good news!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news that confronts the bad news:

1. God already knows that you have a sinful heart.

2. Because of your sinful heart, you do not seek after a Holy God, who gives you life and breath, joy and peace forever with Him.

3. Instead of loving God as you should, your sinful heart keeps you under the bondage of sin and death in the world.

4. God already knows all this about you, that your end is death because of your sinful life, and for this reason God our loving Father sent His Son Jesus to earth from heaven to rescue you from the clutches of sin and death that control you.

5. God in His perfect love desires that you turn away from your sinful desires and look to Him as the Lord of your life, but how when you are caught up in sin?

6. The answer is that God Himself performs this saving act through the miraculous work of His Son Jesus Christ, who came down from heaven, was born of the virgin Mary, lived a holy life on earth, was crucified on a Roman Cross, died, was buried, and rose from the dead on Sunday through His bodily resurrection.

7. God's act of love in Christ coming down from heaven to save sinners like you and me, by defeating sin and death in the world through the cross of Christ - this is the powerful Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Good News is that God so loved the world that He sent Jesus Christ into the world to seek and find sinners to save for Himself (John 3:16-21).

But first Jesus asks you a question:

What are you seeking?
